Small-scale fisheries

Mele Ikatonga Tauati is from Tonga (South Pacific) with 15 years of experience in Pacific small-scale fisheries. She holds a BSc in Marine Science (University of the South Pacific, Fiji) and a MSc in Tropical Marine Ecology and Fisheries Biology (James Cook University, Australia). She first worked in government at the Tonga Ministry of Fisheries implementing community-based fisheries management and coastal fisheries programs in 2006-12, then with the Samoa Fisheries Division in 2014-16 on coastal fisheries management and monitoring. She joined the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s Sub-regional Office for the Pacific in Samoa as a Junior Professional Officer in Small-Scale Fisheries (2017-19) then as a Small-Scale Fisheries and Aquaculture Consultant (2019-22). She recently joined the Equitable Livelihoods Team of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division in FAO Headquarters in late 2022 as a Fishery Officer (Small-Scale Fisheries).
