Contributions to the Field:
Livestock Sector Advocacy: I have been a vocal advocate for Kenya’s vibrant livestock sector. Despite significant financial hurdles, he highlights its importance, supporting an estimated 25 million livelihoods and contributing 42% to the national agricultural GDP1. Biobanking for Indigenous Chickens: In January 2024, i covered a groundbreaking project seeking to conserve African indigenous chicken breeds. I reported on Dr. C. Kamidi Muhonja’s efforts at the National Animal Genetic Resource Centre & Data Bank (NARGRC&DB) in Uganda, where Ugandan local chicken gonads were conserved for future generations.
Renewable Energy in Flower Farms: I highlighted the innovative shift by Kenyan flower farms toward renewable energy. United Selections, a rose breeder based in Nakuru, embraced solar power to reduce production costs. Ecoligo Limited, a Kenyan-based company, facilitated the transition to renewable energy from electric sources.
Lake Naivasha Conservation: In 2019, i reported on the threat to Lake Naivasha’s terrain during a contentious boundary review. My coverage emphasized the potential loss of over 100,000 acres if the government proceeded with the proposed boundary changes.
