    • 1. It is CSOs that are closer to the farmers and field-functionaries and understand better the ground-level realities, problems and challenges faced.

      2. CSOs help translate the official jargon and the technical terms into an easily understandable form suitable for the relatively less educated masses.

      3. CSOs, in general, work more passionately and devotedly than all others including the governmental staff.

      4. CSOs undertake tasks as their 'personal tasks' rather than a 'given task for a salary'.

      5. CSOs can effectively contribute to gain necessary momentum for SDGs if given a chance. How? FAO has to shortlist genuine CSOs that have shown results in their own working - and then FAO must raise their faith on CSOs.

      6. Best results can be expected by a working combination of the two; presently it is too skewed towards FAO.

At last - regarding challenges CSOs face to engage with FAO -

      > Working of CSOs is not as structured as FAO demands; FAO must compromise in small measures and be ready to 'experiment'. I believe - the risk will be far less than the significant gains and achievements made.

      > CSOs prefer to complete the tasks - rather than filling long details in applications or submitting series of forms and reports - need to find a way out. Test of completion of task should be 'deliverables'.

      > Develop a middle level cadre of experts [senior - probably superannuated personnel] - who would suggest on good/ dependable CSOs based on the track record - suitable for the specific tasks at hand.

Having worked in both the systems - first in the Government system and, after superannuation, in the CSO - I personally know and hence confidently made the above points. Thanks.

    • Dear Members,

I am impressed by the strong linkages of the local people that brings them together for the local common cause (like) : better integrating the local livestock breed with local agriculture to reduce extreme poverty. Local breed has the capacity to - first of all - provide some nutrition to children and women, and, when improved through breeding it has strengthened local livelihoods. Examples from the rural areas of Kutch in Gujarat state for the local Banni buffalo breed helped eradicate extreme poverty during the last decade, just as the case (in Telangana state) of highlighted use of draft power of local Nallamalla cattle males for local agriculture brought some income for the families to bring them out from extreme levels. I note, the local breeds and local resources automatically adapted to whatever climate change, and saved us from planning any new actions to save from warming or climate change. Improved breeding was necessary, and interestingly, the farmers, especially the elders, knew this was the better approach. Message is: Instead of planning a major change, minor but planned alterations here and there to bring in facilitating the life-cycles (of livestock, crops and microbes) with cordial linkages among the local people to get together for the common cause - can do wonders.

      Thanks,

      Sadana

    • There is a need for a simply written one or two page note - on importance of pollination, value of pollinators, present-day-felt reduction in their numbers, AND, how common people can help promote pollinators.

Reduced bearing of vegetables/ fruits in the kitchen garden are becoming obvious to common people. HOW COMMON PEOPLE CAN HELP raise awareness like telling the importance of diverse and the traditional/local flowers/cultivars can help; how reduced use of chemicals can help - should be highlighted in those two pages.

Detailed treatises for farmers or for policy are important - but those two pages are also important for the common people like us - to talk in our casual meets, common discussion groups because pollinators are so important!
