FAO-WFP Joint Monthly Briefing on the Global Food Security Situation

16/12/2021

On 16 December, FAO and WFP held their seventh joint briefing aiming at informing Geneva-based Permanent Representations on the achievements made by the Food Security Cluster in 2021 and requirements for 2022. As of September 2021, out of the 157.3 million of people in need in 2021, the Food Security Cluster reached 89.4 million people with food security interventions. Of these, 73.1 million received food assistance (35% of which in cash and vouchers) and 22.1 million people received livelihood assistance (30% of which in cash and vouchers).

The funding situation is and remains alarming. On average, 43% of food security response plans were funded. This figure drops to 37% when adding regional response plans. In 2022, the Cluster aims to target 126 million people. For this to happen, the Cluster requires USD 13.2 billion. These figures do not include Regional Response Plans and are indicative, as some countries have not finalized the HRP process. The Cluster called for flexible multiyear funding and investment in anticipatory actions.
