FAO in Geneva Nutrition Dialogue Series - Second dialogue: “Food Systems for Addressing Acute Child Malnutrition and Advancing Better Livelihoods in Africa’s Drylands: From Research to Action”

The second session of the FAO in Geneva Nutrition Dialogue Series focused on the challenge of persistent acute malnutrition, the growing scale and complexity of humanitarian crises, and the need for a more systemic and collaborative understanding of the nature of the problem. Building on research undertaken for the last five years in the dryland areas of Chad, Sudan, South Sudan and Kenya on the systemic drivers of the problem, the webinar presented the methods and findings of a study designed to test a food systems intervention.

The Livestock for Health Research Project was implemented in the arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya and aimed to reduce the risk of acute malnutrition in children below 5 years of age and in pregnant and lactating women. The work represents a multifaceted approach led by the Government of Kenya with support from FAO, in collaboration with Tufts University and Washington State University, UNICEF and other UN agencies and partners, supported by USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).
