FAO present at Switzerland’s largest scout gathering ever

31/07/2022

FAO in Geneva joined the United Nations stand at the Swiss National Jamboree 2022 to raise awareness of FAO’s work on SDG 2 (Zero hunger) and SDG 12 (Sustainable consumption and production) among thousands of scouts. The event also provided an opportunity to engage with the extensive youth scout networks and promote the World Food Forum among them.

The Swiss National Jamboree (a large gathering of scouts) took place from 23 July to 6 August 2022, for the first time in 14 years. FAO was among other UN agencies present in the Canton of Valais for this event that hosted around 30,000 scouts from all over Switzerland as well as the USA, the UK, Italy, Belgium, Serbia, Poland, Czechia, Finland, and Sweden.

Over its three-day presence, the FAO in Geneva team on site managed to engage with many participants on the topics of food loss and waste, hunger, agriculture, FAO’s mission, and other related themes such as climate change. Various activities were organised at the FAO stand. Scouts between the ages of 12 and 18+ were able to take a quiz on SDG 2 to stimulate an engaging discussion on hunger and food waste. Interaction with younger scouts below 11 years of age, relied on more visual activities from the FAO children’s Activity Book ‘Eating Healthy Matters’. The FAO stand also featured a ‘solutions board’ where all scouts at the campsite could share their ideas on achieving zero hunger by 2030.

Contacts with five different scout groups were established to collaborate on a potential joint side-event at the World Food Forum. The Geneva Liaison Office is following up on a possible partnership with the Geneva Scout Association or other Scout groups in Switzerland to showcase their contribution to ‘Healthy Diets, Healthy Planet’.
