HNPW 2022: Responding to food crises through building community resilience to climate related and other social-economics shocks

12/05/2022

On 12 May, in the context of the Humanitarian Newtworks and Partnerships Weeks (HNPW 2022), IFRC and FAO held an event entitled "Responding to food crises through building community resilience to climate related and other social-economics shocks". This panel discussion showcased the partnerships between national, regional and local institutions in Mali, Madagascar, Uganda and Zambia aiming at strengthening food security through resilience to climate-related shocks.

The event aimed at (i) showcasing the progressive development, from the global to local level, of conceptual models developed by FAO, IFRC and partners that contribute to community resilience with a focus on food crises; (ii) raising awareness of effective ways to integrate food security and livelihoods programmes to build community resilience; and (iii) sharing what IFRC and FAO country and regional offices do with Red Cross National Societies, governments and other partners to improve community and household food security and resilience to future compounding climate and other shocks.

The event addressed the “how-to” at national, sub-national, and community levels, with a systemic approach, particularly in three areas:

  1. Increasing policy coherence, strengthening of community disaster risk management and resilience-building practices for food security and agricultural livelihoods (e.g. community disaster response plans and structures, climate-smart and conservation agriculture)
  2. Strengthening of traditional or informal community-based mechanisms for food security and agricultural livelihoods (e.g. provincial level seed stock), including anticipatory action for food security.
  3. Sustainable management of community/shared livelihood assets in the face of climate-related shocks (e.g. natural resources and ecosystem restoration and management)
