FAO Liaison Office in Geneva

Launch of the “One Health Dialogue – Health through Healthy Agri-food systems”

02/11/2021

Launch of the FAO Geneva One Health Dialogue series.

First session on the theme "Health through Healthy Agri-food systems".

During the Celebration of the One Health Day on 3 November 2021, the FAO Liaison Office with the United Nations in Geneva organized this event as part of a series of regular One Health Dialogues.

This introductory session of the One Health Dialogue series informed Geneva and the international community on the engagement and approach of FAO on One Health and the critical close collaboration and partnership with WHO, OIE, UNEP other UN and not UN organizations.

This One Health Dialogue series will provide an opportunity to:

(i). Sensitize the Geneva humanitarian and development community on the magnitude of the zoonotic

diseases and AMR related risk as well as on the relevance of the One Health approach as an integral

part of agri-food systems transformation in the context of Agenda 2030.

(ii). Inform Policymakers.

(iii). Promote One Health models and good practices increasingly replicated in countries and regions.

(iv). Increase national investments in One Health systems.

(v). Understand better the role of FAO and partners in One Health initiatives and issues at all levels.

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that recognizes that the health of humans, animals, plants, and our ecosystems are closely linked and interdependent. Agri-food systems are both impacting and impacted by human, animal, plant and environmental health. They are an integral part of the One Health approach.

More on this topic:

The health of animals, people, plants and the environment is interconnected. One Health is an integrated approach that recognizes this fundamental relationship and ensures that specialists in multiple sectors work together to tackle health threats to animals, humans, plants and the environment. The global impact and response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a human health crisis caused by a virus passed from animals, highlights the need for coordinated action across sectors to protect health and prevent disruption to food systems.
