Malaysia Parliamentarian delegation exchanges on food security challenges with FAO

FAO in Geneva received a visit from a Malaysian delegation of parliamentarians, including delegates from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, to exchange views on various issues of mutual interest, particularly the current global food security situation, the impact of the war in Ukraine on food security and global agricultural markets, inflation, and climate change among other issues.

Mr Dominique Burgeon, Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the United Nations in Geneva provided an overview of the situation of food security and nutrition in the world, underscoring FAO’s response to global food insecurity. He also briefed the delegation on the role of the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 in support of the 2030 Agenda.

Mr Burgeon highlighted the urgency of agrifood systems transformation and emphasized the linkages with other key systems in the International Geneva environment such as trade, environment, humanitarian response, health, and social protection, among others. “Putting Food Security issues on the table in Geneva deliberations is critical,” he concluded.

During the discussions, the Malaysian delegation highlighted several pressing issues back home form fertilizers prices, to urban poverty, raising inflation, nutrition, food loss and waste, and the impacts of climate change, all issues that FAO has a role to play in support of its Members.
