Sixth edition of the FAO-WFP Joint Monthly Briefings on the global food security situation

16/11/2021

On 16 November, FAO and WFP hosted their sixth joint monthly briefing aiming at i) raising awareness of the activities the two Agencies are implementing to strengthen climate resilience and ii) providing an update of the food security situation in Burkina Faso.

During the first part of the briefing, both Agencies highlighted that today’s context calls for joined-up approaches bridging development, climate and humanitarian action, which recognize the challenges faced by local communities to prevent, anticipate, absorb or cope with increasing climate extreme and slow-onset events, often compounded by other disasters and crises. WFP and FAO gave practical examples of the climate risk management interventions they are implementing on the ground at household, local and national level.

During the second part, the FAO Representative and WFP Country director in Burkina Faso provided an overview of the situation in the country, where almost 2.9 million people, or 13% of the total population, are acutely food insecure. Together with a protracted security deterioration, climate change is one of the drivers of food insecurity, as the country experiences recurring droughts, floods, erratic rainfall, as well as desertification. In 2020, Burkina Faso was the world's fastest growing displacement crisis and over 1.4 million people are currently internally displaced. This is 40% higher than in the previous year. FAO and WFP stressed the activities they are implementing to respond to the most immediate needs, while tackling the root causes of the crisis, adopting a Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus approach.
