The Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly (WHA75): One Health approach has never been more needed

23/05/2022

The discussion on agenda item 16.2, Strengthening WHO preparedness for and response to health emergencies at Committee A of the Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly (WHA75) occurred on 24 May, which focused on document A75/17, the final report submitted by the Working Group on Preparedness and Response to Health Emergencies (WGPR). Mr. Dominique Burgeon, Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the UN in Geneva, delivered a statement.

In his intervention, Dominique emphasized that the One Health approach has never been more needed to guide proper and balanced investments in health systems, including humans, animals, and the environment, for a healthier and safer world. He noted the progressive integration of the One Health approach in the discussions of the working group on strengthening WHO preparedness and response to health emergencies.

Moving forward, the implementation of the One Health approach needs to be appropriately considered by the Intergovernmental Negotiation Body as a guiding principle. The partners of the Quadripartite are committed to working together to address these risks and finalize the One Health Joint Plan of Action that provides a strategic framework for action and proposes a set of activities to advance and sustainably scale up One Health Implementation.

Mr. Dominique Burgeon has also delivered a pre-recorded statement during the General discussion of the Plenary meeting of WHA75 on 23 May, in which he highlighted the interconnectedness between peace and health.
