Fun in the Sun: FAO Spreading Awareness on Food Security

20/08/2023
Geneva - The FAO Liaison Office in Geneva (LOG) is committed to raising awareness of FAO's mission and value, especially amongst the local community and youth. With this mission in mind, FAO in Geneva partook in the fifth edition of the Festi Terroir this year, with aspirations to continue involvement in the local community in Geneva, Switzerland.

With the festival taking place at the Parc Des Bastions and inviting 15 000 people, FAO participated to communicate about FAO’s work in fighting hunger, additionally providing insight into other future events that FAO organizes in Geneva, such as one health, food safety, social protection, or agriculture trade talks. FAO Geneva staff engaged the general public, including producers, consumers and travelers attending the festival, having informative conversations about FAO’s Four Betters, Sustainable Development Goals 2030, and the history of FAO.

Engagement Activities: Sticker Surveys & Multiple-Choice Quiz
To boost engagement, the FAO Liaison Office in Geneva set up various activities, such as surveys and a quiz game in a fun and creative manner.  Sticker surveys were centered around two questions, which dealt with ways to prevent food waste and how to slow down climate change. Participants were asked to put a sticker on one of the four boxed solutions that highlighted the various avenues of sustainable methods and solutions. With multiple solutions provided a display of diverse sustainable solution options and prompted open-ended conversations about ways people can prevent food waste and slow climate change.

For the multiple-choice quiz, the engagement activities focused on questions on food facts, food safety, antimicrobial resistance and the history of FAO. While going through the answers, FAO staff provided supplementary explanations and reasoning behind the answers.

Dominique Burgeon, Director of FAO LOG, said “Festi Terroir provided a unique opportunity to build a stronger relationship with the local community, while spreading awareness of FAO’s work in fighting hunger globally and spotlighting the transformation of agrifood systems through the Four Betters, leaving no one behind.”
