Geneva press engagements on Food Security in October

31/10/2023
Geneva - The FAO Liaison Office in Geneva regularly collaborates with the United Nations Information System (UNIS) to ensure FAO’s activities and messages are delivered to the media community in Geneva. From 20 September to 30 October, four press engagement activities were rolled out to communicate about the latest updates of the FAO’s works, including flagship publication launches, humanitarian responses and global food commodity prices.

As a new approach to better engage with journalists, FAO in Geneva organized an informal media breakfast for World Food Day and World Food Forum celebrations and provided information on the two flagship initiatives and FAO’s work in improving water resource management. Following the overview from Dominique Burgeon, Director of FAO in Geneva, Jippe Hoogeveen, the Senior Technical Officer of the FAO Land and Water Division, also joined virtually to brief about the importance of sustainable water management. Journalists and organizers were able to discuss more in depth the World Food Week activities and share feedback on this new engagement modality.

Jose Rosero Moncayo, Director of the FAO Statistics Division, joined the biweekly Geneva Press Briefings to share the latest findings from the report “The impact of Disasters on Agriculture and Food Security 2023,” which offered a critical look at how agriculture and its subsectors had been affected by disasters over the past three decades and showcased opportunities for proactively addressing risks in agriculture. He said that the sustainability of agrifood systems was essential for providing livelihoods and ensuring global food security. However, agriculture remained one of the most exposed and vulnerable sectors in the context of disaster risk, given its profound dependence on natural resources and climate conditions.

In light of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, Dominique Burgeon spoke to the press and highlighted that food loss and waste was a global issue that had negative economic, social, and environmental impacts. He added that millions across the globe had been malnourished while more than 3.1 billion people had been unable to afford a healthy diet in 2022. At the same time, 30 percent of food was either lost or wasted.

Before the Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, Thanawat Tiensin, Director of the FAO Animal Production and Health Division shared information on the upcoming conference. Tiensin stated that focus ought to be on improving the efficiency of livestock systems, which included optimizing feed conversion, reducing waste, enhancing nutrient utilization, reducing the degradation of land and water resources, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, and mitigating environmental degradation. He highlighted that this Global Conference was only the first step in a journey towards striking a balance between livestock sustainability and global food security.
