Press engagement in Geneva on Food Security matters

21/09/2023
In the context of the biweekly Geneva Press Briefings organized by the United Nations Information System (UNIS) in Geneva, the FAO Liaison Office in Geneva regularly collaborates with UNIS to ensure FAO’s activities and messages are delivered to the UN-accredited journalists. During the third quarter of 2023 (as of 20 September), sevenpress engagement activities were rolled out to communicate about the latest updates of the FAO’s works, including flagship publication launches, humanitarian emergency responses and global food commodity prices.

The stand-alone official press conference for the launch of ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI)’ was jointly organized with IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO in Geneva, alongside the two press conferences in Rome and New York. Marco Sanchez Cantillo, Deputy Director of Agrifood Economics Division (ESA), spoke on behalf of FAO at the press conference and highlighted that “It is estimated that between 691 and 783 million people in the world faced hunger in 2022.” He added “If we consider the mid-range, which is about 735 million people, it is still 122 million people more who faced hunger in 2022 compared to 2019, before the pandemic.”

In light of the official launch of the publication “Tracking progress on food and agriculture-related SDG indicators 2023,” in Geneva, Jose Rosero Moncayo, Director of the Statistic Division, spoke at the Geneva Press Briefing-in-person to brief about the publication. He quoted “What could not be measured could not be improved,” and added that there was a need to speed up investment in data gathering and analysis.

With the deteriorating food security situation in Sudan, Adam Yao, the FAO Deputy Representative in Sudan connected from Port Sudan and joined the Geneva Press Briefing twice, once with WFP and once with the wider UN agencies (OCHA, UNFPA, OHCHR, UNHCR, WHO), to deliver the food insecurity situation in Sudan. Quoting the latest data from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Report on Sudan, he said that the food security situation in the country was deeply alarming, with 42 percent of the population facing high levels of acute food insecurity.

As part of the regular monthly updates, Maximo Torero, FAO Chief Economist, and Upali GalketiAratchilage, FAO Senior Economist of the Markets and Trade Division, addressed the journalists on the global price changes in the food commodities, including cereal, vegetable oil, dairy, meat and sugar, for June, July and August.
