The Blue Ports Initiative (BPI) is committed to transforming marine ports into catalysts for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social well-being. Recognizing the integral role ports play in communities, the initiative seeks to enhance their operational efficiency and impact, thereby fostering local development and broader societal benefits.
On the way towards the Blue Transformation of ports, BPI has established a strategic model to transform ports into hubs of sustainable development, with a focus on inclusivity involving all stakeholders, local communities, global partners, academia, private enterprises, and governments.
Working groups
The BPI operates through three main Working Groups (WG) which address the main three pillars of sustainability:
Social Welfare
Contributes to a better understanding on topics related to community engagement, professional training, women empowerment, health, security and dissemination of cultural heritage
Environmental Preservation
Promotes renewal energy and just transition at fishing ports, as well as address waste management and MARPOL compliance related issues
Market-oriented Innovation
Promotes entrepreneurship as strategic action to bring innovation to small-scale fishing sector, including circular economy, landing sites, labelling, or added value to seafood products.
