Transport Infrastructure Development
To create an enhanced enabling environment for cocoa, vanilla & fisheries value chains development in the Sepik region, the EU-STREIT PNG Programme works on providing technical and material support for a sustainable, climate-resilient and efficient transport infrastructure in the region which will facilitate and improves access to communities and markets in Sepik.

As part of this effort, the Programme promotes local resource-based approaches in the infrastructure works, seeking to (i) increase participation of local communities in the planning and implementation of transport infrastructure works, (ii) increase the creation of paid jobs and income by applying employment-intensive work methods and (iii) secure the involvement of the local construction industry. The dimensions of increased employment and income opportunities and more private-sector business prospects are expected to create additional synergies with the sustainable and inclusive economic development ambitions of the project.
The Programme activities in this domain also place emphasis on strengthening the capacity of local institutions responsible for the improvement and maintenance of Papua New Guinea's transport infrastructure, introducing approaches relying to the extent possible on the use of local resources such as local entrepreneurs and communities and climate-resilient. All activities are inclusive and gender-mainstreamed, targeting women, youth and disadvantaged groups.
The support provided by the Programme to improve the access of farming communities includes maintaining and rehabilitating roads, airstrips and jetties, which mainly focuses on eight main domains of technical assistance and interventions:

  • 300 Km Road maintenance and rehabilitation.
  • 5 Airstrips maintenance and rehabilitation.
  • 4 Jetties construction and rehabilitation.
  • ½ million decent paid job creation through Transport Infrastructure.
  • Capacity building of 388 stakeholders and contractors.
  • Skill development of 150 youths and women.
  • Web-based Road Transport Information Management system (RoTIMS).
  • Policy level support and Guidelines.
