While a wide range of satellite-derived forest, land use and tree cover maps are available publicly, these products often show substantial differences due to differing definitions and land cover classification systems used. This means that no single definitive source of geospatial data can tell the whole story around any given plot of land. 

With just one click, Rabbie is able to verify whether a deforested patch of land is the result of commercial logging or agriculture, quantify the amount of tree cover loss, and identify which of the 12 vegetation types and plantations it falls under. All from the comfort of his office chair.

While it sounds like magic, it’s science. Over the past decade, cutting-edge technology and innovation have transformed countries’ abilities to monitor, report and manage their forests - resulting in better forest protection, restoration and sustainable land use.

In November 2023, the Forest Data Partnership (FDaP) brought together palm oil supply chain stakeholders for a workshop held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The two-hour session focused on the key data challenges related to compliance with deforestation-free regulation, standards and policies.

Traceability and transparency in supply chains are necessary to understand the impact of commodities on forests.
