Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics

Advancing Agricultural Statistics: The Global Strategy Assistance Concludes in Zambia with Workshops on Farm Typology and Data Analysis and Presentation of Results

19/12/2023

From November 20-23, 2023, a FAO mission was held in Zambia, concluding the technical assistance to improve the agricultural statistical system of Zambia within the Global strategy.

The four-day mission comprised a technical workshop on data analysis for farm typologies and a restitution workshop. The technical workshop, which spanned three days, adopted a hands-on training approach, where participants from ZamStats and the Ministry of Fishery and Livestock developed calculation routines using AGPROD pilot survey data. Mariana Toteva led the sessions, focusing on the conceptual framework of farm typologies and the practical computation of indicators. Despite some challenges, the training was well-received, with participants actively engaging and showing a strong interest in learning.

The training significantly enhanced participants' skills in applying statistical software for data processing. The hands-on approach allowed for the practical application of calculation procedures to real farm-level data. The restitution workshop successfully presented the technical assistance results of the MSF, AGROPROD, and FT packages. The workshop was well-received by those present, highlighting the fruitful collaboration with FAO.

This mission marked a pivotal step in enhancing Zambia's agricultural statistical capabilities. The hands-on training approach and the subsequent restitution workshop not only fostered a deeper understanding of farm typologies but also showcased the practical application of the AGPROD survey data. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the FAO Zambia Country Office for their invaluable support and facilitation throughout the mission. Additionally, profound appreciation is due to our donors, the European Union and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, whose generous contributions made this significant endeavour possible. Their ongoing commitment plays a pivotal role in driving such initiatives forward, fostering sustainable development and enhanced agricultural data systems in Zambia and beyond.
