Bridging the Data Gap: Dissemination Training Workshop Concludes in Lesotho

14/09/2023

In Lesotho, a series of training workshops facilitated by the GSARS programme have successfully concluded.  Led diligently by expert Amsata Niang, a technical workshop was held to encourage enhanced data accessibility and utilization; these sessions were structured to simplify complex concepts and strengthen participants' skills in data dissemination. A notable highlight was the inclusivity of the initiative, with 9 out of the 13 attendees being female, underscoring the commitment to gender representation in the data sector. The event was structured around three main themes.

The first segment of the workshop introduced participants to the Open Data Standards and Dissemination, where they learned about the principles of open data platforms. Through training modules, they had the opportunity to organize and analyze data from the agricultural surveys conducted in Lesotho in the years 2019 to 2021, understanding the practical aspects of data management and dissemination.

Following this, the workshop covered the important topic of Statistical Disclosure Control (SDC). In this section, participants were familiarized with the theoretical concepts surrounding the protection of sensitive statistical data before sharing it with users. They got hands-on experience using various statistical tools, which further helped in understanding the practical implications of securing sensitive data effectively.

Towards the end of the workshop, the focus shifted to Microdata Documentation. Here, participants learned the process of documenting and cataloguing microdata in a systematic manner. This component aimed at training attendees to ensure data is both accessible and easy to comprehend, facilitating its use for future reference and analysis.

In summary, the workshop served as a beneficial platform for participants, helping to improve their capabilities in data management and dissemination, thereby contributing positively to Lesotho's data system.

Looking ahead, it's clear that the workshop has laid a promising foundation for substantial advancements in Lesotho's data management and dissemination. Under the guidance of the Global Strategy and its partners, the initiatives sparked during the workshop are being cultivated with a collaborative spirit, working towards greater data access for users, a vital step in fostering data-driven policy-making and effective monitoring.
