Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics

Concluding an In-depth Workshop in Côte d'Ivoire on Setting up Microdata Sharing Programs

The consistent and accurate dissemination of official statistics is a primary goal for national statistical systems agencies (SSN), a principle emphasized by the United Nations' Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics (UNFPOS). It is in this context that, from 09 to 13 October 2023, a comprehensive week-long training workshop took place in Abidjan, focusing on enhancing the dissemination of agricultural survey microdata. Guided by the expertise of statistician Bruce Wife NANA NANA, attendees were immersed in key areas of data anonymization, microdata documentation, and data archiving. Of the 14 participants representing vital stakeholders, 20% were women.

The training was methodically segmented into three main modules:

  1. Statistical Disclosure Control Process (anonymization): The first three days were dedicated to understanding the Statistical Disclosure Control of microdata surveys. To complement theoretical knowledge, a case study based on simulated microdata from an agricultural survey in Côte d’Ivoire was used as a practical example.
  2. Microdata Documentation: Day four was centered around familiarizing participants with the DDI (Data Documentation Initiative) documentation standards. Additionally, an introduction to the DCMI (Dublin Core Metadata Initiative) standard was provided. Practical exercises using the Nesstar Publisher software ensured hands-on learning.
  3. Data Archiving: The workshop concluded with a thorough overview of the NADA (National Data Archive), data cataloging and dissemination system, providing insights into the various functionalities and administration aspects of NADA.

The implementation and success of this workshop would not have been possible without the continuous support from the country office during the entirety of the training. Our gratitude also extends to our valued donors, the European Union (EU) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Their financial backing was essential in ensuring the workshop's smooth execution and success.
