In the framework of the 2nd phase of the Global Strategy to improve agricultural and rural statistics (GSARS) a training was conducted in Lesotho on the computation and interpretation of economic indicators. The training was led by Franck Cachia, International Consultant on agricultural statistics.

This training, organized from the 14th to the 20th of January 2023 at the UN House in Maseru, was attended by 14 participants (9 of them female) from the Bureau of Statistics (BOS) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

A restitution workshop was then organized on Friday 21st of January to present the results of the technical assistance activities to key stakeholders in Lesotho and to discuss the way forward, especially in terms of integration of the tools into existing survey procedures.

Participants in this event included major producers and users of agricultural statistics in Lesotho, such as IFAD, FAO, Lesotho’s Millennium Development Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the BOS. These stakeholders agreed on the need to improve data dissemination practices in Lesotho, as well as data use, and stressed that the support provided by the GSARS II in this field was instrumental and needed to be pursued.

They also insisted on the importance for national stakeholders to take full ownership of the approaches, processes and tools on which training was provided.
