Regional training workshop on basic agricultural statistics

On the 3^rd of July 2023, the African Centre of Statistics (ACS) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria opened the Regional Training Workshop on Basic Agricultural Statistics in Abuja, Nigeria which will run until the 14^th of July 2023. The workshop is training 30 participants from statistical institutions and agriculture line ministries in nine (9) members states and three regional economic communities on basic knowledge and skills in agricultural statistics.

In the message of Honourable Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer, National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria, he emphasized how accurate and reliable agricultural statistics are essential for evidence-based decision making, policy formulation, and effective resource allocation in the agriculture sector. He also underlined the importance of the training in providing the platform for sharing best practices, methodologies, and experiences in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating agricultural data thereby strengthening the national statistical systems, improve data quality, and enhance the capacity of our institutions to meet the growing demands for agricultural statistics.

 The training, which built on the success of the first training in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in November 2022, is ECA and FAO’s commitment under the Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) Phase II project in ensuring the availability of data that supports decision-makers with better allocation of limited resources in a beneficial and long-lasting manner to positively impact smallholder populations and to help track progress against key outcomes.

Le 3 juillet 2023, le Centre africain des statistiques (ACS) de la Commission économique des Nations Unies pour l'Afrique (UNECA) et l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO) en collaboration avec le Bureau national des statistiques du Nigéria ont ouvert l'atelier régional de formation sur les statistiques agricoles de base à Abuja, au Nigeria, qui se déroulera jusqu'au 14 juillet 2023. L'atelier formera 30 participants des institutions statistiques et des ministères de tutelle de l'agriculture de neuf (9) États membres et trois communautés économiques régionales sur les connaissances et compétences de base en statistique agricoles.

Dans son message, l'honorable Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, statisticien général de la Fédération et directeur général du Bureau national des statistiques du Nigéria, a souligné à quel point des statistiques agricoles précises et fiables sont essentielles pour la prise de décision éclairée, la formulation de politiques et l'efficacité de la répartition des ressources dans le secteur agricole. Il a également souligné l'importance de la formation en tant que plate-forme de partage des meilleures pratiques, méthodologies et expériences en matière de collecte, d'analyse et de diffusion des données agricoles, renforçant ainsi les systèmes statistiques nationaux, améliorant la qualité des données et renforçant la capacité de nos institutions à répondre aux demandes croissantes de statistiques agricoles.

 La formation, qui s'appuie sur le succès de la première formation à Abidjan, en Côte d'Ivoire en novembre 2022, est l'engagement de la CEA et de la FAO dans le cadre du projet de phase II de la Stratégie mondiale pour l'amélioration des statistiques agricoles et rurales (GSARS) pour assurer la disponibilité des données pour une meilleure allocation de ressources limitées de manière bénéfique et durable pour avoir un impact positif sur les populations de petits exploitants et pour aider à suivre les progrès par rapport aux résultats clés.
