Global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics

Training & Restitution Workshop on CAADP Indicators Concludes in Guinea: A Milestone in Agricultural Statistics and Policy Development

14/11/2023

A training workshop on the Calculation of Indicators was held in Conakry, Guinea, from October 10 to 13, 2023, guided by expert Maurice Taondyandé. This training was a key part of the second phase of the Global Strategy for the Improvement of Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARSII), focusing on enhancing the capacity of national staff in agricultural statistics. The workshop was inaugurated by representatives from the FAO office in Guinea and the director of the food security information system of ANASA, with the participation of eleven attendees, including two women. These participants represented a variety of institutions, demonstrating a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach. The institutions involved were:

  • Agence Nationale de Sécurité Alimentaire et Agricole (ANASA)
  • Institut National de la Statistique (INS)
  • Bureau de la Stratégie de Développement, serving as the focal point for the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP)
  • A monitoring and evaluation officer from FAO Guinea

During the training, Maurice Taondyandé provided comprehensive instruction on the definitions and methods for calculating selected agricultural indicators, using data from the Harmonized Survey on Household Living Conditions and the 2022 annual agricultural survey, with practical sessions in data processing using statistical software.

Following the training, a restitution workshop on Indicators was held on October 13, 2023. This session, led by the Deputy Director General of ANASA, saw active participation from experts across various sectors, including ANASA, INS, the Development Strategy Bureau, and other key agricultural institutions. Discussions focused on the targets of agricultural indicators and methods for estimating nutrients N, P, and K. Participants expressed a need for detailed, prefectural-level results, achievable primarily in agricultural surveys. The technical assistance from the FAO was highly valued, and ANASA committed to integrating missing indicators into the agricultural survey questionnaire, emphasizing the need for strengthened collaboration with CAADP stakeholders.

In conclusion, the success of these workshops reflects the collaborative efforts of all participants and the invaluable support of the FAO office in Guinea. Special thanks are also extended to our donors, the European Union and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, for their crucial support in making these workshops successful and for their ongoing commitment to improving agricultural statistics and data-driven decision-making in agriculture and rural development.
