FAO and Ministry of Agriculture Distribute 166 Tonnes of High-Quality Seed Potatoes to Farmers in Bekaa and Baalbek-El Hermel

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture have distributed 166 tonnes of high-quality seed potatoes to 415 selected farmers in Bekaa and Baalbek-El Hermel this week. Each farmer received 400 kg of seed potatoes, carefully selected for their adaptability and familiarity to local growing conditions.
This initiative aims to support local farmers in conflict-affected areas, ensuring continued agricultural production and strengthening resilience by enabling farmers to stay and work on their lands.
With the distributed seeds, farmers can expect a yield of up to 8 tonnes of potatoes by the June-July 2025 harvest, approximately 100-120 days after planting. This increased production will contribute to local food supply, support livelihoods, and improve food security in the region.
By increasing potato cultivation, this initiative is expected to enhance food security, improve farmer incomes, and promote sustainable agricultural practices in vulnerable communities.
