Biopesticides

The use of biopesticides in locust control offers a number of advantages as compared to conventional chemical pesticides. Biopesticides are safer for the environment, people and animals. Consequently, they can be used in environmentally-sensitive areas such as national parks or near water bodies where chemical pesticides are not allowed. Biopesticides can also be applied near beehives, crops that are about to be harvested and villages. They do not harm people or animals.

Despite their advantages, biopesticides are not be widely used because the locusts do not appear to die immediately, it may be more difficult to store, mix and apply biopesticides, and the cost may be higher than conventional pesticides.
