The changing face of global banana trade
24 April 2014, Rome – Despite the continued importance of multinational companies in the global trade of bananas, their involvement in banana production has fallen dramatically over the past three decades. Their sphere of influence is now shifting to favor other areas in the sector, which is opening the door to opportunities for other companies.
Ekaterina Krivonos is an Economist in the Trade and Markets Division of FAO. In the following interview she explains this shift in power and what effect it has on the market and small-holder banana producers.
