Aquaculture – the answer to food insecurity and poverty alleviation
©FAO/Christena Dowsett
Fish, crustaceans and molluscs – these are some of the aquatic organisms that are being produced through aquaculture. These food products are an important source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. To meet the ever increasing demand for fish consumption, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says that aquaculture is the answer that will also contribute to food and nutrition security, poverty alleviation and human well being. Currently, Arni Mathiesen, Assistant Director-General of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department at FAO says "90 percent of aquaculture production is in Asia, and 10 percent is in the Americas, Europe and Africa."

Mr. Arni Mathiesen, Assistant Director-General, FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department talks about the significance of aquaculture to UN Radio's Donn Bobb.
