Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos highlights rural development’s contribution to peace

15 December 2016, Rome--- President Santos was awarded the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to ending Colombia’s 50-year-long civil war. FAO and the European Commission are key supporters of rural development plans designed to foster rural and national peace in the wake of the conflict. In August 2016 the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia asked FAO to collaborate in the implementation of peace agreements aimed at fighting hunger and promoting rural reforms and development.
