![](/fileadmin/user_upload/mediacatalogue/audio/images/small_190sharknew.jpg)
Lost, abandoned and otherwise discarded fishing gear are hurting the marine environment, impacting fish stocks through "ghost fishing" and posing a hazard to boats, according to a new report jointly produced by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UN Environmental Programme (UNEP). The phenomenon accounts for about 10 percent of all marine litter, or 640 000 tonnes worldwide.
