FAO helps foster new food frontiers with African orphan crops

Aspiring and established plant scientists from around Africa gathered in Kenya’s capital for a workshop co-sponsored by FAO to review what has been achieved so far by the African Orphan Crops Consortium (AOCC). The AOCC has empowered more than 172 scientists, nearly 40 percent of whom have been women, and 28 African countries in the use of genomics-assisted approaches to crop improvement.

The FAO Farmer Field School (FFS) introduced Jacqueline to several innovations that helped revolutionize her farming. The biggest of these changes was turning FFS groups into cooperatives, with a focus on connecting farmers to markets. Now part of a cooperative, she wasn’t just learning better techniques—she was becoming part of a larger network that would help her access markets, sell her products and boost her income.
AAFC hosts the third stakeholder meeting on cell-based food and precision fermentation

On 10 October 2024, stakeholders from various parts of the world gathered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for a global meeting on cell-based food and precision fermentation. The meeting welcomed approximately 60 participants, including representatives from various departments and agencies of the Government of Canada, to discuss various technical issues around foods derived from cell culturing and precision fermentation.

Empowering Afghan Farmers through Farmer Field Schools with the support of USAID

In January 2024, everything changed for Sayed Osman when he joined the Farmer Field School (FFS), introduced by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and ActionAid. FFS brings together 20-25 farmers in a group, providing hands- on training in modern cultivation methods, pest control and the use of high-quality seeds. He learned new practices that significantly increased his wheat yields.

Beekeeping brings hope to Afghan women in remote villages through USAID-funded food security programme

Through USAID's "Strengthening Rural Livelihoods and Food Security Programme" in Afghanistan, implemented by FAO, 1 500 women-headed households received beekeeping packages across eight provinces in 2024 and another 1 500 women-headed household will receive the same package in 2025. Amina, one of the recipients, was provided with essential equipment, including four improved beehives, protective gear, and training. Previously, she worked as an agricultural laborer, supporting her family on 1.5 jeribs (0.3 hectares) of land, with one cow and five goats. Read Amina's story.
