Partnership Brief Series: Harnessing beekeeping resources to address rural community challenges

The FAO Partnerships and UN Collaboration Division presents a brief showcasing FAO’s partnership with the International Federation of Beekeeper's Associations Apimondia

Apimondia and FAO have partnered for over 60 years to address data and knowledge gaps concerning bees and other pollinators, beekeeping and bee products, with the aim of supporting countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while advocating for the protection and promotion of bees and pollinators.

Apimondia and FAO have undertaken a wide range of activities together, including knowledge exchange, awareness campaigns, specialized trainings and joint publications.  Together the partners have worked to: promote the role of bees and pollinators as essential in protecting biodiversity and advancing agroecology; promote sustainable beekeeping practices, particularly within rural communities and among Indigenous Peoples; and organize and host the annual celebration of World Bee Day on 20 May.

About the partner:

Apimondia is the International Federation of Beekeeper’s Associations and other organizations working within the apiculture sector, created in 1895.  It promotes scientific, technical, ecological, social and economic apicultural development and fosters the exchange of knowledge and dialogue between beekeepers, scientists, honey traders, development agents, technicians and legislators.  Its biennial International Apicultural Congresses serve as the foremost global for a uniting all stakeholders in the field of apiculture.
