The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food visits the International Treaty

16/02/2012

The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Prof. Olivier de Schutter, visited the International Treaty on 17 January to discuss with the Secretary of the International Treaty, Dr Shakeel Bhatti, some of the recent developments in the implementation of the Treaty and their relevance to the realization of the Right to Food. The meeting with the Special Rapporteur took place in the context of a series of visits that he is making to work closely with FAO and the Rome-based UN agencies, in order to discuss how they are contributing or might contribute to a better implementation of the Right to Food.

The discussions with the Treaty Secretariat focused on the recent progress in the operations of the Benefit-sharing Fund as example of a transparent multilateral mechanism for supporting farmers in developing countries. The Secretary of the Treaty also took the opportunity to brief him on the recent decisions taken by the Governing Body as well as on partnerships with other inter-governmental organizations and the private sector.
