Ministers Adopt Bali Declaration on the ITPGRFA
The Ministerial Conference on Biodiversity, Food Security and Climate Change, held on 11 March 2011, in Bali, Indonesia, adopted the Bali Ministerial Declaration on the Role of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Food Security. The Declaration reflects participants’ commitment to engage in further enhancing implementation of the Treaty, in order to help meet the challenges of agricultural biodiversity erosion, food insecurity, extreme poverty and the effects of climate change. In the Declaration, Ministers and high-level officials from 48 countries call upon parties and relevant stakeholders to: prioritize activities relevant to the Treaty’s Multilateral System on access and benefit-sharing (ABS), sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and farmers’ rights; and to mobilize more effective and timely contributions to the implementation of the ITPGR Funding Strategy, including its benefit-sharing fund.
