World Water Day 2021's theme was "Valuing Water." Water has enormous and complex value for households, food, culture, health, education, the economy, and the integrity of the natural environment, in addition to its price. If one of these values is overlooked, this limited and irreplaceable resource may be mismanaged. For the Maghreb countries, the potential of unconventional water resources is considerable and increasing over the years. For example, the total volume of wastewater produced by the five Maghreb countries is estimated at around 2 billion m3 /year. Around 900 million m3 of wastewater produced is treated, of which only 15 percent is reused. This report is the result of collaboration between FAO Subregional Office for North Africa and the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) within the framework of FAO Regional Water Scarcity initiative (WSI) and the project "Unlocking the Potential of Treated Wastewater and Drainage Water for Agricultural Development in Maghreb countries". Based on a thorough analysis of the main challenges and the most recent developments in the water sectors of the five countries, it seeks to highlight the key results of the dialogue between the Maghreb countries. Additionally, the outcomes of two pilot sites and cost-benefit analyses that led to an investment plan are also covered.
