This was the project preparation phase, which ran between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021, supported by GEF. The project supports the national efforts to develop and implement Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) national targets through sustainable land management (SLM) leading to sustainable dryland agriculture and rangeland system management.

During the preparation phase of the Project Document, the three components of the project were designed:

  • Component 1: Strengthening the enabling environment for LDN including the institutional and legal framework on land use management.  This will be implemented improved inter-sectoral coordination mechanism on SLM, desertification land degradation and drought (DLDD) and LDN and through gender oriented comprehensive capacity building program.
  • Component 2: Demonstrating LDN approach and SLM practices in selected pilot areas of the Absheron peninsula highlighting  of value of the ecosystem services and improvement of land and water management through integrated land management practices.
  • Component 3: Establishing monitoring of the LDN neutrality achieved by other components and ensuring the sustainability of the project outcomes through well developed knowledge management plan. Lessons learned and good practices will be disseminated at national level through developed knowledge products

Activities during this preparation phase support key data gathering and stakeholder consultation tasks that will result in the preparation of the documentation required for submission for endorsement by the GEF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and FAO approval.
