Water is one of the world´s most important resources. It is central to agriculture that accounts for 72 percent of global freshwater withdrawals, to other economic sectors and is core to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Help shaping the 2023 water-climate agenda, the official Water Day (November 14) events spanned many different topics and perspectives, starting with the official launch of the Egyptian presidency’s AWARE initiative, Action on Water, Adaptation and Resilience. Meanwhile, the Water Pavilion offered its own programme on the theme Water, Energy and Climate Nexus.

The outcome of the Water Day will be a summary that will feed into the United Nations 2023 Water Conference to be held at UN Headquarters in New York from 22-24 March 2023. The Conference will focus on the “Midterm Comprehensive Review of the Implementation of the Objectives of the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Sustainable Development’, 2018–2028”.

The Conference will put a spotlight on the sustainable development and integrated management of water resources for the achievement of social, economic and environmental objectives, the implementation and promotion of related programmes and projects, as well as on the furtherance of cooperation and partnerships at all levels.
