In a joint effort to bolster sustainable cropland and water management in Libya, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Libyan Centre for Remote Sensing and Space Science, have unveiled the "MerWat-Libya" Geospatial Platform.

The platform, a pivotal tool in informed decision-making for agricultural development, harnesses advanced information and data capabilities. Funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) through an 830,000 euro grant, it is a culmination of the project "Monitoring, Evaluation and Rationalization of Water Use for the Agricultural Sector in Libya."

The MerWat-Libya Geospatial Platform serves as a digital hub for data exchange and dialogue, accentuating the significance of geospatial technology in contemporary agriculture. Offering a comprehensive suite of capabilities for accessing, processing, and analyzing spatial data, it integrates datasets crucial for informed decision-making, including crop types, cultivated field boundaries, hydrological basins, and soil classification.

At the launch event, a partnership and collaboration agreement among national institutions, including the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Libyan Remote Sensing and Space Science, was approved and signed to ensure the platform's sustainability.

The formal launch concluded with visits to offices hosting the platform, underscoring the commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
