8. FISH PRODUCTION RATES IN RICE FIELDS

The rate of production of fish in the rice field depends on various factors namely, the method of production (extensive or intensive), the species cultured, the depth of water, the fertility of the water and soil, the interest of the farmer in the culture and the production potential of fish (Huet, 1970, Vincke, 1979).

In extensive rizi-pisciculture fish production varies from 1.5 to 3.0 kg/ha/ year in Indonesia, about 3 kg/ha in India (Jhingran, 1975) and 40 kg in Malaysia (Huet, 1970). Coche (1967) citing various authors, mentions that fish production is 135 kg/ha in 6 – 10 months - (Malaysia) and 100 – 200 kg/ha/year (India).

In intensive culture, production is higher, varying from 100 – 200 kg/ha/year with an average rate of 120 – 150 kg/ha/year with. On supplementary feeding production rates are higher. In Japan with common carp artificially fed in rice fields a production of 1100 – 1800 kg/ha/year was obtained (Coche, 1967).

The production rate of fish in rice fields in various countries are given in Table VIII taken from Vincke (1979).
