Appendix 3
PROPOSED BAY FISHERY STATION DEVELOPMENT

This appendix briefly summarizes proposed improvements of the Bay Fishery Station. These improvements are illustrated in Fig. 4.

1. Improved access road to the station. It is understood that this is a provincial road.

2. Improved water supply for the station to obtain independence from the irrigation canal presently used as a main source of water supply and instead utilize the waters of Laguna de Bay for pond operation.

  1. Install a pump station with two diesel powered pumps, one of 100 m3/h capacity and the other 300 m3/h. The station should have a sloped bar intake - a slope of 40 to 45 degrees is recommended - in order to minimize weed and trash collection in the entrance of the intake.

  2. A pump station should be located in the drainage channel, at the midpoint separating the four existing ponds. The piping system for the pumping station should be designed to serve each of the four ponds. The 300 m3/h pump would be utilized for filling these ponds.

  3. A piped distribution system served by the 100 m3/h pump should be provided to serve separately in 19 nursery ponds in the south and east boundaries of ponds 1, 2 and 4. Each pond intake should be separately valved and each of the two main distribution lines should also be separately valved. There should be enough pressure on this line to spray the influent to aid oxygen content.

  4. Each nursery pond should be provided with a separate concrete headwall type vertical drain with removable bulkheads and screens.

  5. The present drainage channel to Laguna de Bay should be deepened so that it can serve as a water intake channel in low water periods. It should also be made deep enough so that it can serve as a boat access channel.

3. Construct an access road and bridges for vehicle access to the levees from the entrance road to the station.

4. On main levees lining the present drainage channel, widen the top berms to accommodate a small wheeled tractor or jeep.

5. Expand the present field office to accommodate additional staff and to provide laboratory and storage facilities. Construction of a two-story addition is suggested.

6. Workshop and additional bodega facilities should be provided. In addition, two metal feed grain bins of about 10 t capacity are needed. The proposed additions should include some minimal dormitory/kitchen and living quarters for security guards and for station personnel who may have to work long hours during spawning operations.

7. On pond 4, the subdivisions between the small ponds should be raised, utilizing either soil or combination soil and timber structures. In the event this raising is not possible, pond subdivisions should be reduced.

8. New spawning facilities, as shown in Fig. 4, should be added to the existing hatchery. This drawing was prepared as a generalized drawing and should be adapted to the present hatchery building.

9. Further study should be given to the possibility of additional pond development in the areas immediately east and west of the present station.
