3. TRAINING

Throughout the year 1975, Mr. Adi Hanafi, the governmental counterpart of the pollution/ pesticides expert, and chief of the chemistry division of the centre, has obtained a training concerning the installation of the equipment, the preparation of the technical and chemical procedures, calibrations, clean-up procedures, sampling problems, etc. About 2 500 injections have been made during this period, a majority handled by Mr. Hanafi.

Subsequent training was also given to Mr. Hanafi, Mrs. Poernomo and the assistant Mr. Timin, on more general methods of water and soil analysis. Among these were: phosphate, suspended matter, chlorophyll, organic matter in water and soil (chemical oxygen demand, and ignition loss), grainsized distribution of sediments and improvement of some other methods.

Shorter-period training was given:

  1. A one week course to Mr. Tatang Sujastani, M.Sc., Ir. M. Fatuchri and Mr. Wasilum, B.Sc., all from the Marine Fishery Research Institute, Jakarta. The subject of the training was focused on the way of sampling for pesticide and oil pollution, while only the principles and limits of gas-chromatographique analysis were given;

  2. a one-month course was given to Mr. Suparno, B.Sc., from the Institute of Fishery Technology, Jakarta. This included training of pesticide analysis of primarily biological samples and fish products;

  3. a two-week training was given to Ir. Supomo T.H. Warddoyo and Mr. Djoko Setijanto from the Bogor Agriculture University, Faculty of Fisheries. Within the limitation of time a basis was given for gas-chromatographic pesticide analysis of aquatic samples;

  4. Drs. Santosa Koesoemadinata of the Inland Fishery Research Institute at Bogor, conducting the bioassay studies on pesticides for the Pesticide Committee, was acquainted with the analysis of pesticide residues during a 20-day period in Jepara;

  5. at the regular training courses (one month or three-month courses) in fish culture in Jepara, lectures have been given on the role of pesticides in aquaculture.
