3.2 TRANSLITERATION TABLES FOR SELECTED NON-ROMAN ALPHABETS

The following transliteration tables have been reproduced from the AGRIS Guidelines for Bibliographic Description (ref. 8, section 3.8).

The transliteration tables that follow enable CARIS Centres using a language with a non-Roman alphabet to transliterate into a representation of the language using the Roman alphabet either for international communication or for data processing.

Transliterations from other alphabets and transcriptions from ideogrammatic languages will be added as and when suitable systems become available.

It is recommended that any CARIS Centre using a language not included in these tables should liaise with the AGRIS input Centre in their country to select their own transliteration standard, use this selected standard consistently, and to inform the CARIS and AGRIS Coordinating Centres which system has been selected.

Note

Although consonants have an 'a' sound, e.g. Kha, sha, dha, at the end of a word this is usually shortened in pronunciation, i.e. jat not jata. In the cases where pronunciation demands a long 'a' sound at the end of a word, e.g. basanta not basant, this will be added by the indexers of the Input Centre using available dictionaries as a guide.

The following pages show some examples of completed CARIS Input Sheets.

All the examples are fictitious and do not imply that the research projects quoted have ever or will ever be undertaken at the Research Insitutions given on the Input Sheets, neither do they reflect on the existence or operation of any present or future National or Regional CARIS Centre. In some cases errors have been included on purpose in order to illustrate possible major errors.
