  • Work under this programme entity was delivered successfully with the use of guard services to maintain vigilance and protect FAO staff and premises. In particular, all necessary technical equipment has been procured, including that for guards, e.g. uniforms, as well as fuel and spare parts for official vehicles and access control activity machines. Furthermore, staff development activity has been carried out regularly and efficiently, including operative shooting sessions.

Support was also provided in coordinating security arrangements, distributing security information and alerts, and assisting in evacuation and other appropriate responses in high-security situations where required.

  • Under this programme entity, FAO continued its participation in the Inter Agency Security Management Network and coordinated with other agencies in the UN system regarding implementation of the Minimum Operating Residential Security Standards (MORSS) and Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS).

Achievements, Success Stories and Lessons Learnt

  • FAO staff in decentralized locations are increasingly facing threats to their personal safety; this a concern shared by the UN agencies at large. To most efficiently and effectively address this concern, a Unified Security Management System has been established to which UN organizations contribute and derive benefits. As part of the effort to ensure greater security for FAO staff serving in decentralized locations, under the auspices of the Unified Security Management System, the Organization along with other members of the UN common system, jointly funds certain costs of the UN Department of Saftety and Security and of the Malicious Acts Insurance Policy. During 2006-07, Programme 9B provided for the FAO funding of these jointly-shared security costs
