INTRODUCTION

This publication will be useful to those who are in charge of introducing programmes of artisanal boatbuilding. Its presentation makes it suitable for immediate application.

The elements of this document are drawn from practical experience gained during the boatbuilding programme of project UNDP/AVB/FAO - IVC 526. Fisheries Development of Lake Kossou.

GLOSSARY

Canoe:Small fishing boat, i.e. dugout canoe.
Caulking:Filling a seam with oakum or compounds.
Channel iron:Metal bar of U-shaped section.
Chine:Lowest side planks of a boat. The bottom planks are fastened to it.
Chine moulding:Small planks fastened to the chines, giving protection to the edges of the bottom planks.
Clamp:Tool used to press two pieces together.
Countersink:Depth bored into the planking to provide space for screw heads.
Depth:Vertical distance between sheer line and bottom of boat.
Drill:Tool used for boring holes.
Frame:Structure giving transverse shape and rigidity to the boat.
Keel:Timber extending along the bottom on the outside of the boat.
Marking gauge:Instrument to mark off parallel lines.
Mooring line:Line for tying the boat to wharf or buoy.
Mould:Rigid structure upon which the boat is built.
Oakum:Flax or hemp used in caulking.
Pattern:Full-size drawing reproducing the outline of an object.
Plane:Tool for shaping and smoothing wood.
Planking:Planks of wood covering the boat.
Rotting:Decomposition of wood caused by fungus, mainly due to more than 20% humidity.
Sawhorse:Light bench used mainly to cross-cut planks.
Sheer plank:Uppermost plank on the boat's side.
Spokeshave:Plane used for round surfaces.
Staggering:Alternation of nails to prevent splitting of wood.
Stem:Forward end of the boat. Piece of wood to which the side planking is fastened.
Stem moulding:Plank covering the stem and protecting the ends of the side planking.
Stern:Rear end of the boat.
Stiffener:Boards holding the planking together between the frames.
Struts:Supporting piece of a structure.
Transom:Transverse timbers at rear end of the boat.
Watertight:Impermeable to water.
Wedge:Tapering piece of wood used to hold planks to workbench during edge planing.
Workbench:Working table.
