La pirogue KOSSOU I a les caractéristiques suivantes:
Longueur hors tout | 5,55 | m |
Largeur | 1,11 | m |
Creux | 44 | cm |
Poids approximatif | 110 | kg |

The Kossou I has the following characteristics:
Length overall | 18 ft | 2 ¾ in. |
Beam | 3 ft | 7 ⅝ in. |
Depth | 1 ft | 5 ¼ in. |
Approx. weight | 242 lb |
The shape of the Kossou I is derived from the Kainji lake canoe designed by Mr. Nordlund (FAO). The type of construction is similar to the IVC 3 designed by Mr. Haug (FAO).
The wood used is “framiré” (Terminalia ivorensis).1
The stability and watertightness of this canoe have proved to be adequate. Oars are used for propelling the canoe.
Kossou I meets the needs of the local fisherman. 2

The boatbuilder generally works with an apprentice, and his minimum average output is one boat every three days. Some carpenters build a canoe in 1 ½ days, the record being one canoe a day. An estimated average production of 8 canoes per month can therefore be assumed.
Experience has shown that average monthly production is much higher, i.e. 10 to 12 canoes per boatyard.
If 1 000 canoes are needed in a year, there should be 11 or 12 boatbuilders.
1 If this wood is not available, the choice should be governed by criteria set out in Chapter 1.
