Dr Harris Phiri, Acting Director in the Department of Fisheries. Holder of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biosphere Conservation with a focus on Fish Population Dynamics and Freshwater Ecology. 33 years working experience in the Department of Fisheries, 23 of which were spent in Research within Zambia and the African Great Lakes region. I am a member of the Lake Tanganyika Authority Management Committee and the Lake Tanganyika Scientific Advisory Group. I am currently working on promoting sustainable development in and around rivers. My hobbies include reading, travelling and listening to diverse genres of music.

The increasing use of plastic-based dam lining in pond aquaculture is posing a danger to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. These can be replaced with more environmentally friendly technologies such as the clay mixtures that are still being experimented on. Besides, the differences in productivity between plastic lined ponds and non-lined earthen ponds does not seem to have been established.
