Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism

Dissemination of good practices
Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM) platform

To foster mutual learning and knowledge-sharing among restoration practitioners, and thereby enhance their capacities to effectively undertake and scale-up ecosystem restoration efforts, the Taskforce on Best Practices has developed a framework for the collection and dissemination of good practices for restoration. This operational framework is integrated into the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM) platform, developed by the FAO-led Taskforce on Monitoring. The FERM consists of a geospatial platform, a registry of restoration initiatives and good practices and a search engine for accessing initiatives and good practices. It is the official monitoring platform for tracking global progress and disseminating good practices for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UN Decade). It also supports countries in reporting areas under restoration for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework Target 2.

To enable wide dissemination of good practices, FERM includes the following functionalities:

1. Documenting, reviewing and disseminating new good practices through the FERM Registry:

The Taskforce on Best Practices developed a template for collecting good practices, along with a thorough review process. This process included the definition of what constitutes a good restoration practice, developing assessment criteria based on the principles for ecosystem restoration, and providing guidelines for a standardized step-by-step review.

Through close collaboration with the Taskforce on Monitoring, the documentation process has been linked to the FERM Registry. This allows for the registration of restoration initiatives and the documentation of associated good practices.

Please find here the step-by-step guide on how to document good practices through the FERM Registry.

2. Facilitating access to existing good practices through the FERM Common Search Engine:

A stock-taking of knowledge platforms that collect and disseminate validated good practices in different ecosystems was conducted.

In close collaboration with the Taskforce on Monitoring, a common search engine has been developed as a functionality of the FERM platform. The common search engine brings together good practices on ecosystem restoration documented by four collaborating platforms: the FERM Registry, LIFE GoProFor, Panorama - Solutions for a Healthy Planet, The World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT). Users can effectively search, filter and access an extensive array of good restoration practices according to their specific needs. Access the common search engine for good practices here.
