Open Foris: Free open-source solutions for forest and land monitoring

Innovative monitoring tools for effective ecosystem restoration

Julian Fox comments on a recently published article in Science magazine highlighting how Open Foris was used by ETH Zurich and FAO to identify almost 1 billion ha for potential forest restoration worldwide. Open Foris is a set of free and open-source software tools for flexible and efficient environmental data collection, analysis and reporting. Governments, researchers and NGOs use Open Foris to generate accurate and transparent maps and information for forest monitoring, among other purposes. Restoration is one of the most effective solutions to climate change, and the new publication is timely given the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, says Fox.
