Freshwater scarcity remains a significant challenge in the NENA region, aggravated by factors such as population growth, climate change, urbanization, and conflict. Achieving SDG 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation, is crucial for the economic and social development of the region. Specifically, monitoring SDG target 6.4 is imperative, addressing water use and scarcity through two key indicators.

In a concerted effort to address the pressing issue of freshwater scarcity in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, FAO Land and Water Division, in collaboration with the inter-Regional Technical Platform on Water Scarcity of the Regional Water Scarcity Initiative is organizing a multi-stakeholder workshop on monitoring and reporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.4. The workshop is scheduled to take place on December 13-14, 2023, and aims to strengthen the capacities of NENA countries in collecting, reporting, monitoring, and analyzing water data for effective policy implementation.

The workshop will include country representatives from more than 15 countries across the Arab region including Egypt, Oman, KSA, Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Morocco among other. The workshop will also include regional and national representatives from NGOs, Academia, research organizations and inter-governmental organizations specialized in the field of water scarcity.
