FAO assessed the state of food security and nutrition in the world

FAO and the Russian Central Scientific Agricultural Library jointly organized a seminar to highlight the key conclusions and messages of FAO’s flagship The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World - 2018.

The annual publication prepared by experts from FAO, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP), and World Health Organization (WHO), summarizes what the achievements in reaching the goals of eradicating hunger, ensuring food security and improving nutrition.

The report assesses the state of affairs in food security and nutrition in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The statistics analyzed by the authors of the study point to the growing problem of hunger in the world. Experts consider that this negative trend in the fight to eradicate hunger and malnutrition is fueled by several factors: e.g. climate change, natural disasters, regional conflicts and civil wars, as well as economic slowdown or socio-economic setbacks in a number of countries.

The keynote speakers at the seminar included Cindy Holleman, Senior Economist, FAO Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA), and Nikolai Dronin, Head of the Laboratory of Global and Regional Geoecology at Lomonosov Moscow State University Department of Geography. The seminar was hosted over the Internet.
