Project's full title City-to-city cooperation for sustainable urban food system
Countries Italy Kenya Rwanda
Start date 23/05/2021
Status Ongoing
Donor Italy
Recipient / Target Areas Kenya, Rwanda
Objective / Goal

In the framework of the Urban Food Agenda, FAO supported a city-to-city exchange between Kigali (Rwanda), Nairobi (Kenya), and Milan (Italy) to strengthen food waste reduction and management in both African cities. Reducing food loss and waste is key to making food systems more sustainable, particularly in the context of increasing urbanization. Milan was able to share its experiences by helping Nairobi and Kigali develop their own action plans on food waste management. Through South-South and triangular cooperation, the cities were able to learn from each other, strengthening food systems at the subnational and municipal levels.

Partners FAO, in cooperation with the municipalities of Milan, Kigali and Nairobi
Beneficiaries Rwanda and Kenya
Activities The knowledge exchange had three main components: 1. Assessment of food waste situation in Kigali and Nairobi; 2. Technical experiences sharing between the three cities through an e-platform and online workshops; 3. Design of an Action Plan for a pilot project on food waste reduction and management.
Impact Thanks to South-South and triangular cooperation, cities have been able to share their experiences and learn from each other and strengthen food systems at sub-national and municipal levels. Under the Green Cities Initiative, launched by FAO in September 2020, Nairobi County and the city of Kigali will soon begin implementing their action plans for food waste management.
